Our travels to Abaco are always full of sand, sun and sea. The Abaco Beach Resort just keeps getting better. In addition to its latest and continuous renovations, they’ve added the one item most active travelers are looking for these days. You guessed it… pickleball courts! Come on, you know it’s a thing. The resort did not stop there with their addition of amenities. You can now check out their new tennis courts and Padel courts. There’s absolutely nothing that out-trends this resort. They have their finger on the pulse of what today’s travelers want. We say dive in and try all of these new additions. The staff, the decor, the food, and the vacation experience are all true to this island’s nature. In a year dominated by artificial intelligence, deep fakes, and disingenuity, that word rose to the top. In a world filled with the same, the abaco Beach Resort also rises to meet guests exactly where they are, with an indelible sense of place.

An uncrowded, pristine experience, which is what awaits in the Abaco Islands and its premier property, Abaco Beach Resort, is a remarkable choice from which to take it all in. The resort and marina are owned by two Bahamians, Manny Alexiou and Andrew Sweeting, who have an affinity for boating and island hopping. You can feel their passion as you gaze out upon the marina from The Bistro where guests are immersed in a subtle nautical themed elegant fine dining experience. The  Bistro Terrace has added a new outdoor seating area with spectacular views of the Sea of Abaco, lush gardens, and dining under the stars.  New menu concepts and feedback from guests rank it as the best dining experience on the island for local and international cuisine, and the service is second to none!

Now you can think of fresh local lobster, elevated, of course…alfresco. The boats bobbing in the marina at sunset can’t help but draw the eye from the plate to the setting sun’s palette.

The Abacos are known for their wild beauty, those azure waters, sandy beaches, emerald hills, six national parks, and some of the best boating in the Bahamas.

Located just 165-miles off the coast of Florida on Great Abaco in the 120-mile chain of islands and cays that comprise the islands of the Abacos, the Abaco Beach Resort recently completed a massive renovation and expansion. The resort renovated all of its 94 rooms, added deluxe accommodation options, created the fine dining Bistro and a new al fresco restaurant poolside, all while building the largest marina in the Bahamas. Don’t call it a comeback, it’s a fresh start.

“The new look is sleek, modern, and sizzles with a fresh energy,” said newly appointed General Managers Andrei & Antonia Mocanu. “It has breathed new life into this historic property.”

Here’s a rundown of some of the new amenities

All accommodations at the 40-acre beachfront resort boast an ocean view and a patio or balcony to enjoy it from. In addition to rooms, the property offers one-bedroom oceanfront suites, and updated two-bedroom residences, and a three-bedroom penthouse. All are equipped with high-end Parachute linen from New York and Molton Brown amenities.

“Our Residence accommodations are perfect for multi-generational family travel and offer a more private, luxurious experience,” Andrei said.

Foodies will delight at the new dining venues unveiled in the resort’s renovation. The casual Pool Bar and Terrace at Marinaville is open all day. Breakfast features classics like Eggs Benedict, while the lunch and dinner menus are packed with local fare like cracked conch and a decadent lobster burger. A variety of salads, pizzas, sandwiches and main courses like Surf & Turf with Bahamian lobster and filet are also on offer.

“The new look is sleek, modern, and sizzles with a fresh energy…”

The Iconic Abaco Beach Resort welcomed renowned Executive Chef Rome’ha Forbes to lead its culinary team. A 20-year veteran in the culinary industry, Rome’ha started his stellar career at the age of 16 as an Apprentice Chef at the then Radisson Cable Beach Resort, Nassau, and has since traveled and worked throughout the Bahamas Archipelago perfecting his skills.

Born in the tourism mecca of Nassau, Bahamas, Chef Rome’ha has served as Executive Chef for luxury boutique resorts including Grand Isle Resort, Exuma, and The Abaco Club on Winding Bay, Abaco.

Chef Rome’ha launched his inventive infused Caribbean and Bahamian delicacies at the discerning and quintessential Bistro gourmet restaurant and raised the bar with his authentic, there’s that word again, menu creation at the acclaimed Alfresco style Terrace at Marinaville overlooking the Resort’s state-of-the-art 200 slip marina.

“Chef Forbes’ impressive culinary training and skills have allowed the resort to now offer some of the finest dining in the islands,” said Antonia.

The Boating and Fishing Mecca Details

Perhaps the biggest undertaking in the renovation was the creation of a modern 200-slip marina in Marsh Harbour. The marina can host pleasure boats, sport fishing boats and super yachts up to 200 ft. in length. Customs and Immigration services are onsite. It’s an impressive addition to a resort that was already known for its world-famous fishing tournaments.

Abaco Beach Resort will host four of the top billfish tournaments in the world in 2023. Skip’s tournaments include the Blue Marlin Tournament, White Marlin Roundup, The Shootout, which pits production boats against custom craft, and the Custom Shootout, featuring 50 custom boat teams. It is the most elite collection of sport fishing boats in one location.

“We’re thrilled to host not one, but four of the top sport fishing events in The Bahamas,” said Mocanu. “The tournaments bring the best in the sport to Abaco and an exciting atmosphere to the resort.”

Did Someone Say Island Hopping

The charm of the Abaco’s lies in the ability to easily hop between the many islands. Whether you are an experienced captain or not, both can make use of the very safe waterways between the islands. Remember those dreamy blue waters we mentioned earlier? This is where you can become one with the scenery, get wet if you’d like, or bop from beach bar to beach bar, or restaurant to the famous Tahiti Beach sandbar.

From the new marina, guests set sail to photograph the nearby candy-cane striped lighthouse of Hope Town on Elbow Cay and enjoy the sandy, coconut-tree lined Tahiti Beach. On Man O War Cay you can visit with shipbuilders, and at Pelican Cays National Park soak in the beauty of the shallow coral gardens.

Nature lovers should plan to explore Great Guana Cay known for its vast Elkhorn coral reefs, sea turtles, and migrating birds. Don’t miss stopping in the local’s favorite, Nipper’s Beach Bar for a lively island party any time of day.

These are just a few stops you can take in a just under 100 miles of sheltered waterway known as the Sea of Abaco with many surrounding cays and islands to visit.

Wind Down Time

While the Abacos provide plenty of outdoor adventures and cute towns to explore, no vacation to these laid-back islands would be complete without some down time to relax, rejuvenate and return home more balanced.

The Abaco Beach Resort offers a private white sand beach for guests to grab a chaise to lounge on, sunbathe, read, or enjoy sipping an island cocktail. We loved the oversized beach chess set that was under a thatched roof, right on the beach. We like relaxing while keeping our competitive edge sharp. When guests are ready to jump in the water, complimentary kayaks, paddle boards and snorkeling gear are available. The beach bar offers snacks & drinks and parents can rest assured the kids are having a great time with the Bahama Buddies Program for all kids 4-12 years.

The program offers visiting children the opportunity to learn about island life from a resident child ambassador by spending an afternoon participating in authentic island activities and crafts.

For many, no vacation is complete without some spa pampering and at Abaco Beach Resort the masseuse comes to you, whether you want your massage in a beachside cabana or in the privacy of your room. We would say truly spoiled, but authentic seems the more appropriate word to leave you with. This is the palace for those seeking that barefoot Bahamian experience.

If you’ve visited before, it’s time to come back. The continuous and ongoing efforts by the management to upgrade the resort’s amenities are inclusive of guest rooms, restaurants, and public spaces. Come check it out.

If you’re dreaming of a tropical escape that combines luxury, relaxation, and adventure, the Riu Palace Aquarelle in Jamaica is the latest choice in the destination. Situated on the pristine beaches of Trelawny, just outside of Montego Bay, this all-inclusive resort is perfect for travelers seeking everything from blissful spa treatments to vibrant nightlife, along with a touch of eco-conscious adventure. Recently, I had the pleasure of experiencing all that the Riu Palace has to offer—and let me tell you, it’s an unforgettable Caribbean escape.

Spa Bliss: A Journey to Tranquility

The moment I stepped into the resort’s RenovaSpa, I knew I was in for a treat. With a delicate balance of modern luxury and island charm, the spa instantly soothed my senses. I opted for the Ya Mon No Problem, a signature treatment that’s as relaxing as it sounds. A combination of techniques; relaxing, deep and balancing. All these techniques will make this full body massage a 100% Jamaican sensation and left me radiating with the kind of glow that only comes from an authentic Caribbean experience.

The spa offers a range of treatments, from traditional massages to more elaborate packages designed to pamper you from head to toe.

Explore the Coral Kingdom: A Day at
Montego Bay Marine Park

For those who love nature, conservation, and the great outdoors, no trip to Montego Bay would be complete without a visit to the Montego BayMarine Park. This protected area is a treasure trove of marine life, with crystal-clear waters teeming with colorful corals, tropical fish, and sea turtles.

The resort is an integral partner and offers a guided boat ride to the park, and I joined a small group for a thrilling afternoon on the water. Our guide, a local marine biologist, shared fascinating facts about the park’s ongoing conservation efforts and how the community is working to preserve Jamaica’s coral reefs. As we cruised through the calm waters, we spotted a variety of fish, including angelfish and parrotfish, darting in and out of the vibrant coral formations below.

What truly amazed me was the glass bottom boat ride—the perfect way to get up close and personal with the underwater world without getting wet. The boat’s transparent floor offered panoramic views of the reefs, giving us a front-row seat to the vibrant marine life. It’s clear that the Marine Park’s efforts are paying off: the reefs are thriving, and the water is more colorful than ever.

The Riu White Party: A Celebration of
Style and Energy

As the sun dipped below the horizon, it was time to embrace the lively side of Riu Palace Aquarelle. The highly anticipated White Party—a signature event at the resort—was nothing short of spectacular. Guests were encouraged to wear their finest white attire, and the atmosphere was electric with laughter, music, and the kind of energy that only a tropical night can inspire.

Held under the stars, the party featured a world-class DJ who kept the beats flowing long into the night. There were stunning costumed dancers, who wowed the crowd with their performances, and plenty of themed cocktails to sip as the night unfolded. The party truly highlighted the vibrant spirit of Jamaica, with guests from all around the world coming together to celebrate life, music, and the island’s infectious charm.

Riu Palace Aquarelle: The Perfect Fusion of
Luxury and Local Culture

Whether you’re unwinding at the spa, exploring Jamaica’s rich marine life, or dancing the night away at a glittering White Party, the Riu Palace Aquarelle offers an unbeatable blend of indulgence and adventure. The resort not only offers luxurious amenities and top-tier service, but it also immerses you in the local culture and natural beauty that make Jamaica such a beloved destination.

If you’re planning your next getaway, look no further than this stunning resort. With its breathtaking setting, thrilling activities, and laid-back yet vibrant atmosphere, Riu Palace Aquarelle is the ideal place to relax, rejuvenate, and make unforgettable memories.

Rediscovering the Caribbean Aboard EXPLORA II

There’s something unmistakably captivating about the moment a ship first casts off, its hull gliding through the water as you settle into the rhythm of the sea. My husband, David, and I had been anticipating this day for months—the start of an extraordinary journey aboard EXPLORA II, the latest addition to Explora Journeys’ fleet, as it repositioned from Barcelona and made its way through the Caribbean. With Antigua as our boarding port, we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect backdrop to begin our voyage—a place where the aquamarine waters are so clear, the sunsets so breathtaking, they almost seem too beautiful to be real.

“From the moment we stepped aboard EXPLORA II, it was clear that this wasn’t just any cruise.”

The ship itself is a work of art, a harmonious blend of understated elegance and cutting-edge design. The interiors, created by renowned designer Christophe Leoni, exude a sense of refined luxury—soft, neutral tones, rich woods, and expansive spaces. It’s the kind of place where every detail is meticulously crafted to create an atmosphere of calm sophistication, but without any pretense. Here, we felt less like passengers and more like privileged guests at an exclusive seaside resort.

Our journey would take us from Antigua to San Juan, eventually concluding in Miami. But it was the upcoming visit to San Juan that intrigued me most. A city we had both visited before, but never with this kind of focus. We were eager to see it through a new lens—one that would give us a deeper understanding of its vibrant history, culture, and charm.

A Fresh Perspective in San Juan

After a day spent in blissful indulgence on board EXPLORA II—spa treatments, champagne on deck, and dinners that felt more like performances than meals—we arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with the promise of an adventure waiting just outside the dock.

This wasn’t going to be your typical guided tour of the city’s landmarks. Instead, we opted for something far more immersive—a bike tour of Old San Juan with local guides, Nancy and Nikki, from Rent The Bicycle, who knew the city’s history like the back of their hands. With our helmets securely fastened and the salty Caribbean breeze at our backs, we cycled out into the maze of cobblestone streets, past the candy-colored buildings and crumbling fortresses that seem to tell the city’s story with every crack and corner.

Nancy led us down narrow alleyways and through plazas that felt suspended in time. There’s an intimacy to biking through a city—it allows you to move at a pace that’s fast enough to cover a lot of ground but slow enough to really take in the details. We passed the iconic blue cobblestones of Calle del Cristo, admired the pastel facades of colonial buildings while Nancy educated us on the history of Caribbean pastel color palette drenching each building. Come to find out there is a history to these colors and they are known as the Caribbean Rainbow. Contrasting these bright playful colors, we stopped for a moment of quiet reflection at Castillo San Felipe del Morro, the majestic fortress that has stood guard over the bay for centuries.

As we pedaled through the streets, Nancy and Nikki explained the island’s layered history—from its Indigenous roots to the Spanish colonization, the struggle for independence, and its more recent role as a U.S. territory. But it was the smaller, more personal stories that really brought the city to life: the legends of pirates who once terrorized the coast, the secret hideaways where local artists once gathered to plot revolutions, and the vibrant cultural fusion that gives San Juan its distinctive flavor today.

For David, who had visited the city many times before for business, the bike tour offered an entirely new perspective. “I’ve always seen San Juan through a tourist’s lens,” he admitted, pausing by a sunlit fountain. “But now, I see it as a living, breathing place with so much more to offer than just its beautiful views.” And it was true—San Juan, for all its postcard-perfect charm, is a city of contradictions, where old and new, Spanish and Caribbean, coexist in a delightful, often surprising, harmony.

“I’ve always seen San Juan through a tourist’s lens, but now, I see it as a living, breathing place with so much more to offer than just its beautiful views.”

Luxury At Sea

After a day of exploration, we were more than ready to return to EXPLORA II. If the city had offered us a rich tapestry of history and culture, the ship offered us an equally indulgent experience—one that blended world-class luxury with a laid-back atmosphere that was perfect for unwinding  after an active day.

Dinner that night in Sakura, one of the ship’s signature restaurants, was nothing short of spectacular. The menu was a celebration of fresh fish, sushi, tempuras and had a sake sommelier. These unique touches elevate the EXPLORA experience. After dinner, my Scottish husband was determined to share a whiskey in MALT WHISKEY BAR. Along the way, we made several friends at sea who were more than eager to partake in an evening sharing some of the world’s finest elixirs. The pairing of these with an expansive selection of cigars was one that even I could not resist. The cigar lounge, attached to MALT, was oh so easy to slip into a state of sophisticated relaxation. The evening lingered on as the smoke wafted through the dimly lit lounge, and our bodies sank into the plush leather furniture. Suffice it to say that no one wanted to head down to bed until the wee hours of the morning.

The luxury aboard EXPLORA II isn’t just in the five-star accommodations or the gourmet meals; it’s in the thoughtful details that elevate the entire experience. From personalized shore excursions to the private terraces with ocean views, the ship feels like a home on the water—a place where you’re always treated like family, but with all the comforts of a 5-star resort.

The Joy of Discovery

As the ship set sail for our next destination, I found myself reflecting on the essence of this journey—the way it had allowed us to explore both familiar places and unfamiliar experiences with fresh eyes. In a world where travel often feels rushed and over-scheduled, EXPLORA II allows you the time to slow down and truly connect with both the destinations and the people around you.

The bike tour in San Juan was a perfect example of this philosophy—a chance to get off the beaten path and immerse ourselves in the true spirit of the island. Whether it’s savoring a meal crafted from the freshest local ingredients, or taking in a sunset from the deck of the ship, it’s these moments of connection that make travel truly transformative.

As we sailed onward, the Caribbean unfolded before us like a secret waiting to be discovered. And in a way, it felt as though we, too, were being redefined—by the sea, by the people, and by the experiences that awaited us at every port of call. Wanting to immerse ourselves even more deeply into the essence of this journey, we took a step inward to Ocean Wellness, the indulgent spa onboard. The hands of the masseuse, the quality of the massage table, the oils used, and the tranquil roll of the sea melted every ounce of stress from our bodies. This finishing touch was the perfect setting for inward exploration.

EXPLORA II is more than just a cruise. It’s a journey that allows you to explore the world at your own pace, to rediscover places you thought you knew, and to experience luxury that’s as rich in detail as it is in feeling.

In a world of fleeting moments and crowded destinations, there’s something profoundly special about a voyage like this—where discovery, relaxation, and adventure are not just a promise, but a reality. And for David and me, this was just the beginning.

“As we sailed from port to port, there was a sense that we were being cared for in a way that made every detail of the journey feel special.”

We were fortunate enough to have Explora’s President, Chris Austin, aboard for our sailing. Swapping my luxury traveller’s hat (for an hour) to my journalist’s hat to not only ask him details about this gorgeous vessel, but to understand why everyone onboard was so welcoming. EXPLORA Journeys, a relative newcomer to the world of luxury cruising, has already garnered a reputation for delivering a voyage that feels as much about exploration as it does about indulgence. EXPLORA II, the newest addition to the fleet, is all about luxury with a purpose. From the moment we stepped aboard in Antigua, we knew we were in for something special—an adventure that blended effortless elegance with the thrill of discovery. Chris explained that the sensation of being welcomed by the international crew started with the fact that they were not known as crew, but rather as hosts. By design, not only are the lush suede furnishings selected to feel indulgent and rich, but the same care was given during the hiring process. I won’t go into much detail here, but suffice it to say that EXPLORA does everything deliberately. The branding, colors, hiring, interviewing, selection of retail outlets, is all done with a purpose. That purpose is to welcome guests to embark upon a luxury journey like no other. When I mention retail, think exclusive high-end merchandise like Cartier. Although the name is on the door, and the exquisite watch collection onboard is all theirs, the folks in the store are all EXPLORA employees. This allows for a seamless luxe experience throughout the journey. Such a clever tweak to make everything flow in one fabulous direction.

Speaking of details; the intoxicating scent of fresh flowers, backed by the aforementioned undertones of suede transported us from pool to pool and restaurant to restaurant. The ship was sleek and modern, and yet it carried a timeless elegance. The interiors are a masterclass in sophisticated design—expansive and open, with neutral tones, soft textures, and floor-to-ceiling windows offering views that blend effortlessly with the interior décor. Whether lounging in the serene Explorer Lounge or strolling along the open-air promenade deck, the ship never felt overcrowded, even though it was comfortably full. There’s a relaxed luxury about EXPLORA II —you never feel rushed, never feel as though you’re just a passenger.

The service on board EXPLORA II was impeccable—discreet yet always available, anticipating your needs without ever feeling intrusive seemed an innate ability of our hosts. As we sailed from port to port, there was a sense that we were being cared for in a way that made every detail of the journey feel special.

Unlike traditional cruises where the emphasis is often on ticking off ports and attractions, EXPLORA II offers something more: the opportunity to slow down, to savor, to experience luxury that is deeply intertwined with the destinations you’re visiting. It’s a way of traveling that feels purposeful and fulfilling, but also blissfully relaxing. Having spent two days at sea, we realized the ship was a destination in and of itself.

Day 1: Setting Sail from Tortola

As dawn breaks over Tortola, the sun casts golden rays on the tranquil waters of the British Virgin Islands. A sense of excitement fills the air as we, a group of five lifelong friends, prepare to embark on a five-day getaway aboard a Moorings 46-foot motor yacht. With its sleek design, spacious deck, and elegant interiors, this yacht promises the perfect setting for both adventure and relaxation.

After a warm welcome from our knowledgeable captain, we step aboard and toast with chilled champagne as the yacht glides out of the marina. The vibrant hues of the Caribbean Sea unfold before us, with lush green hills framing our view. Our first destination is Virgin Gorda, famous for its stunning beaches and captivating geological formations. Not before a quick stop at the floating bar and grill, the infamous Willy T! We did not try the grill bit, but the bar and a few jumps off the top deck were all the introduction we needed to our yachting vacation.

All aboard

The yacht offers a seamless blend of luxury and comfort, featuring an open-plan living area, a fully-equipped galley, and a plush cockpit for lounging. With just the five of us, the atmosphere is intimate and inviting. With spacious staterooms for us on the motorcat, we always had room for privacy coupled with just enough connectivity to each other.

We came to play though…As we anchored near The Baths, we decided to eat ashore versus preparing a gourmet lunch using local seafood and fresh produce. Dining al fresco could wait for another day. We connected with an old friend who lives on the island and ate at the restaurant at the top of The Baths. From there we could soak in the views and share the laughter that comes easily among friends.

DAY 2: Discovering The Baths

Awakening to the gentle sway of the yacht, our day begins with a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters. After a leisurely breakfast, we set off to explore The Baths, where giant granite boulders create natural pools and secret grottoes. Navigating through these stunning formations, we feel a sense of adventure and nostalgia, reminiscent of childhood escapades. Getting lost within the rambling crevices of the boulders seemed like a real possibility at times, but the handy arrows crudely painted on them helped assure us that we were on the right path, no matter how tight the squeeze was at times. With adrenaline coursing through our veins, heavy boulders perched precariously above our heads, the beauty was not to be missed. Clear, cool, pools of water beckoned us to take a dip and a few pictures along the way. Sand turned from powdery soft to grainy at times and all along we felt as though we were transported to an otherworldly place.

Beach Bliss

The allure of the turquoise waters calls us to relax on the beach, sipping rum cocktails and savoring the moment. Our conversations drift from lighthearted banter to deeper reflections, strengthening the bonds of friendship that brought us together decades ago. Preparing to drift from day to night, and spend the evening under the stars, our crew pulls together a sumptuous dinner on deck.

As the sun sets, it’s wonderful to be at anchor. Soon enough, the night ink-black sky sparkles with stars, and the gentle sound of waves creates an enchanting backdrop. We share stories and more laughter, grateful for the memories being made.

Day 3: A Day in Anegada

On the morning of Day 3, we set our course for Anegada, the northernmost island in the BVI. Known for its stunning coral reefs and world-famous beaches, Anegada feels like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. As we approach, the flat island contrasts beautifully with the surrounding islands’ mountainous silhouettes.

It’s time for a little island exploration

After anchoring, we hop on our dinghy to Loblolly Bay, a pristine stretch of sand where we can bask in the sun or take a dip in the sparkling waters. Lunch at a beachside shack introduces us to Anegada’s famous conch fritters, a culinary highlight that showcases the island’s fresh seafood. Everywhere you look there is beauty and natural wonders that the few lucky islanders get to enjoy day in and day out. They welcome us with open arms and share a hospitality that can’t be found in other destinations. Afterall, we are experiencing barefoot luxury that is not shared with the masses. As the only coral island among an archipelago of volcanic isles, Anegada is an anomaly within the BVI. The diversity, just a yacht ride away is alluring.

Evening Revelry

As dusk descends, we return to the yacht for a sunset cocktail hour. The horizon glows with shades of orange and pink, creating a magical atmosphere. Dinner features a feast of grilled fish and local vegetables. Living off the sea that we spend days snorkeling in is such a treat. Nothing is frozen here, only fresh. As we share laughter and reminisce about our adventures, we realize these moments are what make our friendship truly special. This is living.

Day 4: The Charm of Jost Van Dyke

Our next destination is Jost Van Dyke, an island synonymous with laid-back luxury and vibrant beach life. Anchoring in the famous White Bay, we’re immediately drawn to its soft white sands and lively beach bars.

Soggy Dollar Bar Experience

A visit to the iconic Soggy Dollar Bar is a must. We indulge in the legendary Painkiller cocktails, a delightful blend of rum, cream of coconut, and pineapple juice. Please note the plural in cocktails. The name “Painkiller” for the tropical cocktail originated from its intended purpose to help ease the “pain” of a long day in the sun. The drink was created by Daphne Henderson in the 1970s at the Soggy Dollar Bar in the British Virgin Islands. The bar’s name came from the fact that patrons had to swim to get there, which would leave their money wet.

The relaxed atmosphere of this place invites us to mingle with fellow travelers, sharing our favorite travel tales and making new friends along the way.

Water Adventures

Later, we take advantage of the yacht’s water toys—snorkeling gear, paddleboards, and even a kayak. Exploring the nearby reefs reveals a vibrant underwater world, a reminder of the Caribbean’s ecological beauty. Each splash and laugh strengthens the camaraderie we cherish. If you have never hopped off of a yacht into the Caribbean Sea and taken part in any of these activities, it is highly recommended. There’s a freedom and joy that washes over you every time you touch the water. It’s vastly different from simply heading to the beach or kayaking out from the shore.

Day 5: Returning to Tortola

As our unforgettable journey nears its conclusion, we set sail back to Tortola. The final morning is a bittersweet mix of relaxation and reflection, spent soaking up the sun and enjoying the gentle sea breeze. A gourmet breakfast featuring freshly baked pastries and tropical fruits is served on deck, a fitting finale to our adventure.

Final Reflections

With hearts full of gratitude, we bid farewell to our captain, who has made our trip seamless and enjoyable. The memories of laughter, stunning landscapes, and exquisite meals linger in our minds, a testament to the joy of friendship and shared experiences.

A Journey to Remember

This five-day yachting trip aboard The Moorings 46-foot motor yacht through the British Virgin Islands has been more than just a getaway; it’s a celebration of friendship, adventure, and the beauty of the Caribbean. Each island we explored, every meal we shared, and all the laughter exchanged have woven a tapestry of unforgettable memories.

For anyone seeking a unique escape with friends, this journey promises relaxation, rejuvenation, and a deeper connection with both the stunning surroundings and each other. The British Virgin Islands will forever hold a special place in our hearts, reminding us that the best adventures are those shared with cherished companions. So, set sail and let the winds of the Caribbean guide you on your next unforgettable escapade.

We know that the word of the year in 2023 was “authentic” and Abaco Beach Resort is carrying it into 2024 and beyond. Have you gone down for a visit yet? If you have, you’ll know it’s actually woven into the fabric of everything they do at the resort.

An uncrowded, pristine experience, which is what awaits in the Abaco Islands and its premier property, Abaco Beach Resort is a remarkable choice from which to take it all in.

Having been to some of the very best all inclusive resorts and non-all inclusive resorts around the globe, I must say that I tend to be extremely discerning. Visiting S Hotel this year came just at the right time. Needing a little R&R before delving back into the fray of a hectic travel month, I thought that slipping S Hotel in would be the perfect respite that I was seeking. The last time I visited, the hotel was in its pre-opening days. I remembered the vision of Chrsitopher Issa, the owner, being conveyed to me as we walked (briskly) through the matte white walls that rose above the famed “Hip Strip” of Montego Bay. It was a bright idea to create the hotel’s foundation as a blank canvas. Once you visit you’ll see exactly why. It not only lets the guests have a perfect backdrop to the glistening Caribbean Sea but allows the artwork that is rampant throughout the property to pop and stand out. Uniquely Jamaican statuary and art pieces are everywhere. The sense of place is unmistakable and as a Jamaican, I smiled at every turn. National heroes, and iconic legends pointed the way to my next S Hotel moment. Sometimes literally pointing as in the Nanny of the Maroons, the first and foremost leader of the Windward Maroons of Jamaica, an autonomous community of self-emancipated, formerly enslaved people. Seeing her statue point me in the direction of the elevator was very fitting. I was there to emancipate myself from what Bob Marley could easily have been referring to as “mental slavery” where my every thought was filled with the next step at work. His statue, Mr. Robert-Nesta Marley was also moving us along. Guitar in hand, right leg off the ground, his dreads cascading down his denim-clad shoulder was motivation for us to get up, stand up, and head right for the Irie Baths. These cleverly crafted grotto pools in a dimly lit underground setting helped me ease my way into the day. The series of three pools, each having its own temperature is designed as a hydrotherapy experience for guests. Since you have to make a reservation just to secure a time slot to use the bath, there’s never a fear of overcrowding or feeling like a swimming pool. This is a very intimate and tranquil experience. The design is deliberate. The intention is to have you grounded in what surrounds this hotel. The beach upon which S hotel is built is called Doctor’s Cave Beach. The spring fed waters of this beach, just steps outside of these baths, have been known for their healing properties. You feel that sense of healing within these walls.

HISTORY – According to the beach club itself.

“It began in 1906 when Dr. Alexander James McCatty generously donated his beach property to found a bathing club in Montego Bay. The Club got its name because it was used by Dr. McCatty and his friends, who were mainly from the medical profession and at that time, they entered the tiny beach through a cave. The cave, however, was destroyed by a hurricane in 1932. The water which is crystal clear has a temperature range, winter and summer, from 78 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit, 22 to 28 Celsius.

In the end of early 1920’s, Sir Herbert Barker, a famous British Osteopath, visited the beach and later published an article boosting it by declaring that the waters have curative powers and that he was restored to good health after bathing there. He said the waters could cure several ailments. This heightened the allure of the beach and Doctor’s Cave became famous overnight as foreigners, many rich and famous, came to try the water. Hotels were built in the immediate vicinity and thus began the tourist trade.  We are a lot more than just a great beach. We are located in the middle of Montego Bay’s ‘Hip Strip’.”

You are immersed in Jamaica at S Hotel. Luxury is not spared while offering guests a totally Jamaican experience.  I know that phrase can conjure up numerous images for each person reading the story. As a Jamaican though, I can tell you what it means to me. It means you are experiencing the authentic Jamaica. There are certain tastes, smells, colors, and textures that I associate with my childhood, growing up in Jamaica. Those to me are the real Jamaica. A specific shade of green that is undeniably JA. The smell of the rain as it begins to drift over the mountain top and head your way. This is Jamaica. There’s a way of turning every song into a revised reggae hit–this is Jamaica. The taste of the food (beyond jerk) lets you know it’s really Jamaican.

Looking back on the first meeting and tour that I had of this hotel and its infancy, I recall sitting in what is now called Rocksteady, with Mr. Issa and his team including Andres Cope. There was brainstorming going on, debates on whether to make the resort all-inclusive or not, but the one common thread that kept stitching everything together was authentic luxury. Now, sitting in the very same space, the fine dining restaurant called Rocksteady that offers a feast for the senses, I see the manifestation of Mr. Issa’s vision. This dining establishment offers classics with freshly sourced Jamaican ingredients. A white baby grand piano is being played while dinner is served in this reservations-only establishment. The white leather seating, pristine against the black walls, proudly holding framed artwork by the famed Jamaican artist Michael Thompson. The natural coral stone pillars shooting up through the white ceiling are the same natural stone found in the Irie Baths and throughout the hotel; local coral stone for the local feel. Remember that specific shade of green I mentioned? Hopefully you can see it in your mind’s eye. It’s the one from the flag, the same one when you see the Rasta colors for red, green, and gold. It’s painted on pushcarts, wooden signs, zinc siding, and one of the great things about it is it gives me a sense of place. Scenes of classic Jamaica painted on zinc, lining the walls of this restaurant on the roof deck keep you grounded in the destination. Serving up authentic Jamaican classics, ackee and saltfish, jerk chicken, and oxtail and more, all with the innovative S twist in this artful space. This Rohan Blair-designed restaurant is a celebration of the island’s musical heritage and showcases some of the country’s most influential personalities. You really cannot get more Jamaican without hitting the streets. That’s the luxury of this place. You need not do that. The essence of Jamaica is found here at S.

Bobbing in the clear warm waters of the Caribbean and looking back at the white structure against the blue sky we glance up and spot our suite. Taking in the hotel from this vantage point is just as glorious as being within its walls. From the tranquil sea, the brilliant red umbrellas on the pool deck pop. The glass-walled pool on the roof is an inviting exclamation mark from any angle but from below, the cube of floating water beckons. Answering the call and venturing up to the glass encased pool surrounded by a broad wood planked deck overlooking the Caribbean Sea, this pool is a glorious testament to Jamaica being called land of wood and water by its original inhabitants. At every turn and from every angle, S Hotel captures Jamaica.

What is island life without delving into island nightlife, you ask? The answer is Club S! This isn’t your typical club dolled up and housed within the confines of your resort. This is the epitome of a Jamaican club. Guests of the hotel are invited to partake in a truly immersive Jamaican nightlife experience. When we asked the concierge where Club S located, he pointed out towards the guard gate and said, “It’s just over there.” Pointing towards the guard gate. When we approach the guard gate and asked about the club yet again, he politely motioned us toward what looked like the entry to a shopping plaza. In true Jamaican fashion, there was no big sign on the door, and there was a well-dressed gentleman standing at the ready to open the door for us. He had seen us come directly from the hotel and knew exactly what we were looking for, and what that was a good night out. As the door swung open and the reggae tunes drew us in to what can only be described as a perfect replica of local Jamaican dance club, my jaw dropped, and turned to my husband, and said, “This is legit.” The deliberate lean-to feel with plywood walls, made to look dusty, a single bar area, stacked speakers against one wall, two intimate upstairs areas to overlook the dancefloor make this one of the best Jamaican nightclubs I have encountered in decades. S puts its stamp on everything it touches and that indelible stamp is authentic luxury. Say it with me, authentic luxury! Not sure if you read this piece wondering just how I feel about the Small Luxury Hotel, but I love it here! Well done Christopher Issa and team.

The land of wood and water. Seen as you enter the lobby, enter your suite, swim, eat, and sway to the beat.

Bahamas Out Islands and the recently renovated Abaco Beach Resort are known for their brilliant blues, island hopping, and laid back vibes.

Abaco Beach Resort is the perfect hang spot for families and couples alike. Heck, chill time can mean many things to many people. What we will say is that if you like the water, the islands, the Bahamas, “me time”,  family time, or the ability to soak in the best of a destination, look no further. At the Abaco Beach Resort you can do it all or nothing at all.

An uncrowded, pristine experience, which is what awaits in the Abacos and its premier property, Abaco Beach Resort — a remarkable choice from which to take it all in. The resort and marina are owned by two Bahamians, Manny Alexiou and Andrew Sweeting, who have an affinity for boating and island hopping.

The Strand awaits your arrival. Pack nothing more than your resort chic wear, a pair of athletic shoes, swimwear, sandals and an expectation of luxe pampering at the newest exclusive residential rentals on the island. Whether you select your own suite or a one- or two-bedroom villa in its entirety, or the private single family home residence with four to six bedrooms, all guests enjoy the amenities at The Club at The Strand. With that said, you will want for nothing, especially when it comes to the Estate Residences with coastline in the front and a yacht slip in the rear.  Pre-arrival, tailored services can include groceries shopped and stocked in your kitchen. Not to worry, there are invites also available to special culinary events where maybe you could add a dish or two to your own gastronomic toolbelt. Escape the kitchen and dine on property at The Delmar, an upscale Mykonos-inspired restaurant and bar complete with an authentic Parrilla-style grill, serving up the fresh catch of the day.
